 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Economic development bisa berdiri sendiri begitupun community development karena berbeda tujuan diantara keduanya.

• Bhattacharyya; comdev as the process of creating or increasing solidanty or agency. 
• Solidarity: building a deep sense of shared identity . and a code of conduct for community developers.
• Agency: the capacity to intarvene in the word, Ons to refrain from intervention, with the effect of influencing a process o the state of aftairs“ (Giddens) 
• Agency about building the capacity to ; a understand, create and act, and reflect.

THE THEORY OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Relationships: Social capital Theory 

• Social capital : set of resources intrinsic to social relations and includes trust, noms (equality, reciprocity), and networks 
• Life can be richer if there is trust among neighbors and others in the public and private sectors 
• Strong social capital can also breed intolerance and smuqness > strong bonding social capital, but it does not build any new bridges that can expand horizons, provide new ideas, or generate wealth.

What should you do? 

• Communities which low levels of social capital 
• Bonding social Eapital > sharing food and drink, celebrations, storytelling, dance, or public art. Communities which strong bonding social capital 
• Bridging social capital > creating a new team through a mutually supportive network and linkages

Power: Conflict Theory 

• Foucault (1985) argued that where there is power there is resistance. 
• Conflict theory suggests that conflict is an integral part of social life. 
• Example: Appalachian community VS The state Department of Transportation (DOT) > Neutral third party could create a safe Climate for discussion 

Confict Theory can help: 

• Understand why some people are silent or have intenalized the values of elites even to their own disadvantage 
• Communities can also explore the use of conflict to upset the status quo

What should we do? 

Neutral Third Party 

1. Analyze the power of the DOT (researchers, such as economists, foresters, sociologists, and planners) 
2. Report was widely circulated by the community to the media and prominent state legislators. 
3. Protests, economic boycotis, peaceful resistance 

Shared Meaning: Symbolic Interactionism 

Herbert Blumer (1969) named the theory “symbolic interactionism” because it emphasizes the symbotic nature of human interaction rather than a mechanical pattern of stimulus and interaction. 

• Different individuals or groups attach a ditterent meaning to a particular event. 
• These interpretations are likely to be viewed wae as a form of deviance which may be accepted, rejected, or fought over.

What should we do? 

Helps a community develop a shared vision of their future, she is helping them bulld a sense of unity 

1. Help community to reflect and understand the symbol 
2. Providing information 

Communications: Communicative Action Theory

• The principles of community development ental participation of ciizens in defining thes own problems and dreams > If technicians or political and corporate interests dominate discussions, citizen involvement and porlicipation becomes a mere afierihougn. 
• Hebermas communicative action neory i is guided by the intersection of technical and corporate knowledge with local and practical knowledge

What should you do? 

• Community development involves the participation of networks, groups, and individuals > explore public Issues through the perspective of several public policy choices. 
• Storytelling and did not begin with technical knowledge
